How Does Translation IME Offline Mode Work?

Finish packs, switch engine, test offline—offline does not mean every feature never uses the network.

· · 7 min read

Translation IME offline mode needs the language-pair pack installed in settings, then the offline engine selected. With a complete pack and a supported pair, you can get local translations without internet—this is not a promise that every feature stays offline forever; trust the current panel.

1 What offline mode can and cannot do

You can translate without internet once packs are installed and your pair is listed for offline.

On a subway commute I kept short Chinese→English candidates after Wi-Fi dropped—because the pack had finished the day before. At 80% download, the same test often showed source text only and looked like a broken IME.

Offline is not “the app never touches the network.” First-time pack downloads, update checks, and some account/sync paths may still need connectivity. For sensitive text, read FAQ, Privacy, and the offline setup guide together instead of trusting one toggle label.

2 Enable offline and verify without network

Open Offline Mode or Language Packs, download your usual source/target pair until status is installed. On macOS, delete a stalled partial file and retry rather than waiting forever.

Switch to the offline engine or enable “use offline when no network.” Then disable Wi-Fi or use airplane mode, select Translation IME, and type a few words—translated candidates mean you passed.

Going offline mid-download is the fastest way to misdiagnose a “broken” IME—check pack status before anything else.

If the offline test fails, confirm the pair appears in the offline list before reinstalling.

3 Offline vs online by task

Online often covers more languages for everyday phrases. Offline cuts live requests—better for locked networks, travel without data, or text you prefer to keep local.

Before contracts, medical notes, or unreleased copy, confirm the engine shows offline and skim privacy terms. If settings list no offline pack for a rare pair, do not force it.

Casual chat or email: pick by latency and habit.
Sensitive body text: prefer offline plus a privacy pass.
Jargon-heavy lines: sample both modes; add terms to the custom dictionary.

4 Pack failures, drifty output, still online

Download fails: check disk space and network; remove partial files and retry—see the first-run network checklist.

Candidates appear but quality drifts: update packs or compare one phrase online; park terms in the custom dictionary.

Thought you were offline but traffic still leaves: confirm the engine label in settings and that system proxy is not forcing egress.

FAQ

What do I need to download before using offline mode?

Download the offline pack for your source and target language pair in Settings → Offline Mode or Language Packs. Wait until status shows installed before testing without network.

Does offline mode support every language pair?

No. Supported offline pairs depend on the current release—check the settings panel. Some rare languages or newer engines may be online-only.

Is offline translation quality the same as online?

Offline uses a local model; complex sentences and technical terms may differ from online engines. Test the same phrase in both modes and pick what fits your workflow.

Download and configure offline packs first

If you are ready to install or update, return to the download page and verify the current public version, platform notes, and on-site release information.
